Numpy Isdigit Function

Introduction

In this tutorial, we will cover the isdigit() function of the character module of the NumPy library. The isdigit() function checks whether all the characters in an element are digits or numbers. If all characters are digits or numbers, it returns True, otherwise it returns False. This function is locale-dependent for an 8-bit string.

VM Tips

After the VM startup is done, click the top left corner to switch to the Notebook tab to access Jupyter Notebook for practice.

Sometimes, you may need to wait a few seconds for Jupyter Notebook to finish loading. The validation of operations cannot be automated because of limitations in Jupyter Notebook.

If you face issues during learning, feel free to ask Labby. Provide feedback after the session, and we will promptly resolve the problem for you.

Import required libraries

The first step is to import NumPy.

import numpy as np

Define input array

The next step is to define an input array of strings.

inp_ar = np.array([ '20002', '10009', '12345ab','01' ] )

Apply isdigit() function on input array

The isdigit() function needs to be applied to the input array and saved to a new variable.

x = np.char.isdigit(inp_ar)

View results

The output of the isdigit() function can be viewed using the print statement.

print("The Output is:")
print(x)

Summary

In this tutorial, we discussed the use of the isdigit() function from Numpy library. This function makes it easier to determine whether elements in an array contain exclusively numbers or digits. We reviewed the syntax of numpy.char.isdigit(), arguments and their values, the output format of this function, and provided an example that demonstrated how to use it.
