What is subnetting?

Subnetting is the process of dividing a larger network into smaller, more manageable sub-networks (subnets). Here are the key points:

  1. Purpose: Subnetting improves network performance and security by organizing IP addresses into smaller groups.

  2. IP Address Structure: An IP address consists of a network part and a host part. Subnetting allows you to define how many bits are used for each part.

  3. Subnet Mask: A subnet mask determines which portion of the IP address refers to the network and which part refers to the host. For example, in a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the first three octets represent the network, and the last octet represents the hosts.

  4. Benefits:

    • Efficient IP Address Management: Reduces wastage of IP addresses.
    • Improved Security: Limits broadcast traffic and isolates network segments.
    • Enhanced Performance: Reduces congestion by minimizing the size of broadcast domains.
