What is a primary group?

A primary group in Linux is the main group that a user belongs to. When a user is created, a primary group is automatically assigned, typically with the same name as the username. This group is used as the group owner for files that the user creates. Each user can also belong to multiple secondary groups, but the primary group is the default group for permission management.
