Prepare one complete Git commit for a café menu correction while keeping unfinished seasonal work and private notes outside public history.

Introduction

Commit a Café Menu Update is a small Git project for beginners who want to control what enters a commit. Correct DAYLIGHT CAFE’s public menu and takeaway file while keeping an unfinished seasonal announcement and private tasting notes outside the public snapshot.

One Guided Lab teaches you to inspect the working tree, select part of a file, review the complete staged change, and verify the actual committed menu. An independent Challenge changes the approved bakery correction and the position of the private draft, so you must read the changes before choosing them.

What You Will Learn

  • Distinguish the working tree, staging area and current commit.
  • Set a repository-local author identity and stage only an approved hunk.
  • Include related files so a commit contains a complete usable change.
  • Recover from an incorrect staging choice without discarding working files.
  • Verify the actual committed page and download while preserving private unfinished work.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for Git beginners who can navigate directories, run terminal commands, and read small text files. Knowing the basic purpose of git add and git commit helps; the three repository states and partial staging are explained before use.

The prepared environment provides a Git repository, a terminal, and two real menu views: Working Copy and Committed Menu. No website programming, GitHub account, software installation or external hosting is required. The café, menu and illustration are original training material. Documents support English and eight additional languages; the running website, interface labels and command output stay English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I build a café website?

The menu readers are already prepared. Your task is to choose and verify Git content, using the real page and text download to see the result.

Why should the repository still contain uncommitted work at the end?

The unfinished seasonal announcement and private notes must remain available without entering the approved correction. A completely clean status would not satisfy that preservation requirement.

Does the Challenge depend on my Guided Lab files?

No. Each unit starts with its own prepared repository. The Challenge reuses the taught tools with a different approved correction and draft arrangement.

Does this project teach remote collaboration?

No push is needed. This project focuses on local commit boundaries; shared remote workflows belong to a separate project. The estimated 75 minutes includes reading and ordinary mistakes and has not been measured with novice learners.
