Patch an Older Release is a practical Git project for learners who know basic commits and branches. Keep a supported walking guide useful without shipping an unfinished redesign or disturbing the staged and unstaged work in your main directory.
Two Guided Labs first open the existing maintenance branch in a linked worktree and repair a small download setting, then reuse one isolated development fix with cherry-pick. One independently initialized Challenge changes the supported branch, guide and fix position. Each unit ends with a complete old-edition download and preserved development work. The 110-minute total is an author estimate.
What You Will Learn
- Open an existing branch in a linked worktree with its own HEAD and index.
- Read patches to distinguish a self-contained fix from an unapproved redesign.
- Replay one selected change with
git cherry-pickwhile retaining the supported baseline. - Verify complete real downloads, preserved release content and unchanged development history.
- Keep staged and unstaged draft versions separate and retain private untracked notes.
Who This Course Is For
This course is for beginning Git users who want to handle a small maintenance task while other work remains unfinished.
Prerequisites: Basic terminal navigation, commits, branches and simple log/diff reading. Familiarity with the earlier Git team-merge course is recommended. No website programming is required.
Learning environment: Each unit provides prepared Workspace and Release Desk tabs in your browser. Real Git worktrees and the HTTP preview run on one training machine with original synthetic guides. The preview reads branch commits; it does not deploy a production service. Site labels, file contents and command output remain English.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to install software or have a hosted account?
No. Each unit has its own ready-to-use browser environment and local repository.
Do I need to understand worktrees or cherry-pick already?
No. The Guided Labs explain them before use. Basic Git and terminal familiarity are required.
Is a linked worktree a separate clone or machine?
No. It shares repository objects and branch references while keeping a separate checkout, HEAD and index. The original staged and unstaged draft can stay in place.
How does the Challenge extend the Guided Labs?
It changes the supported branch, guide and selected commit's position. Use the same tools to choose the isolated correction, verify the complete download and preserve the original draft states.
