Taking a Field Guide Offline is a practical Linux project for learners who can enter terminal commands. Prepare a small community nature guide for a walk where its original source will be unavailable. Your result is a portable directory containing the actual pages, illustrations, styles and printable observation sheet.
One Guided Lab takes you from a deliberately incomplete homepage save to a complete, bounded download with relative links. You stop the supplied source yourself and read previously unopened content, then move the whole guide into a handover directory. An independent Challenge applies the same methods to a coastal guide with deeper cards, sibling shared assets and an excluded neighboring activity.
What You Will Learn
- Distinguish a saved HTML page from the separate pages and assets it needs.
- Read a URL's host, port and path, and separate remote scope from local save locations.
- Collect linked static content with Wget while including allowed shared assets and excluding neighboring guides.
- Convert navigation into relative paths that follow the complete directory.
- Stop only the supplied source and use previously unread local content and the real SVG observation sheet.
- Move the directory and read its actual pages through an independent local file server.
Who This Course Is For
For Linux beginners with basic terminal familiarity who can switch between a terminal and a browser tab. No HTML authoring, programming, web-server administration or prior Wget experience is needed. Required options, paths and shell syntax are introduced before use.
The prepared environment includes Workstation, Source Guide and Field Copy. All guide content and illustrations are original synthetic teaching material, not identification, foraging or safety advice. You work only with these authorized static guides; dynamic sites, logins and arbitrary public-site scraping are outside the project.
Instructions are available in eight additional languages. The guide website, actual interface labels and command output remain English; translated instructions preserve the labels you will see.
Frequently Asked Questions
What will I make? A handover/field-guide/ directory with five content pages, three illustrations, a stylesheet and the actual printable SVG observation sheet, plus crawler metadata. Required navigation resolves within the copy.
Does the lab really go offline? You personally stop the guide's source service. LabEx connectivity and the separate local reading service stay available. A fresh local reading route demonstrates independence from the source; the platform itself is not disconnected.
Is saving the homepage enough? No. You first observe why a single saved page lacks its dependencies, then collect the allowed trees and convert their links. The challenge changes the depth and scope relationships.
Do I need to install tools or use a printer? No. The tools and reading services are ready. The real SVG can be opened, saved or printed from the browser menu; physical printing is optional and not assessed.
Can I double-click the files or download the whole directory to my computer? This project verifies reading through the supplied static file server after moving the directory. It does not promise identical file:// behavior across browsers or an unverified platform one-click directory download.
