Securing a Public Object Storage Bucket

Close anonymous document exposure, restrict a portal identity to required reads, and independently protect a partner area without breaking public help.

Introduction

Securing a Public Object Storage Bucket is a practical security course for learners who can use a terminal. Protect internal documents while keeping public help and a legitimate portal available.

Two Guided Labs teach anonymous access repair and a dedicated application identity. One Challenge asks you to protect a partner prefix independently using the same tools and policy format.

What You Will Learn

  • Distinguish buckets, object keys, prefixes, anonymous requests, and named identities.
  • Read and apply a bucket policy that grants only the required operations and resources.
  • Replace administrator application credentials with a dedicated reader.
  • Validate real allowed and denied requests while preserving stored document bytes.

Who This Course Is For

This course suits beginners exploring practical access control. You need basic terminal use; JSON, the selected client commands, and editing are explained before use.

The ready-to-use browser environment runs local VersityGW 1.10.0 and synthetic documents. Its tested S3-compatible subset uses built-in user principals; it does not reproduce full AWS IAM or Public Access Block. No cloud account or local installation is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I create a public cloud bucket? No. All requests target prepared local storage with synthetic credentials and data.

How is completion checked? Real public and named reads must work, prohibited access must fail, and original objects must remain unchanged. Write and delete permission probes run only in disposable equivalent storage.

What changes in the Challenge? A different application identity needs one partner prefix while another partner's documents stay private. You combine the methods practiced in the Guided Labs.
