Proving an Order Backup Can Restore the Shop is a practical PostgreSQL recovery project for DevOps beginners with basic terminal familiarity. You will save a small shop's real orders, open the saved state in an independent service, and prove that new test orders stay in the copy.
Two Guided Labs teach a clear export cutoff and a safe, complete restoration. One independent Challenge applies the same tools to workshop bookings, linked participants and two recovery points. Each unit starts with its own prepared environment.
What You Will Learn
- Identify the actual source and target database before selecting a connection.
- Create and inspect a PostgreSQL custom-format archive with
pg_dumpandpg_restore. - Distinguish the saved recovery point from later original records.
- Refuse a nonempty target and restore transactionally into an independent copy.
- Read complete order or participant relationships, download receipts, and test copy-only writes.
Who This Course Is For
This course is for DevOps learners who can enter commands and recognize paths. No SQL programming, database installation or previous course is required. Connection services, archive options and the required shell syntax are explained when used.
The browser environment provides PostgreSQL, a terminal and two complete synthetic business websites. Documents are available in eight additional languages; website labels, commands and output remain English.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to install PostgreSQL? No. Each lab provides its own prepared database and matching clients.
Will I break the original shop? The exercise preserves original orders and restores into a named disposable database. It teaches identity checks and refuses nonempty targets.
Is this a complete disaster-recovery plan? No. This is a single-instance logical backup and restore rehearsal. It does not cover continuous PITR, off-site storage, server failure or full production recovery.
