Hadoop for Beginners

Learn Hadoop through 9 guided labs and 3 challenges. Manage HDFS files and permissions, understand MapReduce, submit YARN jobs, and diagnose common failures.

Big Data

Introduction

Hadoop for Beginners introduces big data storage and batch processing through a retailer's daily files. In a real Hadoop environment, you will learn what HDFS, MapReduce, and YARN do, then use them to prepare inputs, run a calculation, and check its results.

The course includes 9 Guided Labs and 3 Challenges. Guided Labs explain each concept and operation; Challenges combine previously practiced skills with new datasets. Each activity starts with its own prepared files and services.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • distinguish local files from HDFS and inspect the configured Hadoop environment;
  • upload, organize, copy, and export files while preserving batch inputs;
  • inspect blocks and replicas and test file and directory permissions;
  • trace key/value records through Map, Shuffle, and Reduce;
  • submit YARN jobs, inspect application states and logs, verify results, and rerun with separate outputs;
  • diagnose missing inputs, output conflicts, connection errors, and failed processing tasks.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for learners beginning big data or data engineering who want to use a prepared Hadoop system before studying cluster administration.

Prerequisites: Basic terminal use. No prior Hadoop, Java, or Python knowledge is required.

Learning environment: LabEx provides a prepared Linux terminal in your browser. The single-node environment teaches real Hadoop operations; production cluster deployment is outside this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start without knowing big data or programming?

Yes, if you can use a terminal at a basic level. The course introduces why Hadoop is used and how HDFS storage, MapReduce processing, and YARN resource management fit together. You do not need to write Java or Python.

Where does this course fit in the Big Data learning path?

Start here for the storage and batch-processing foundation, then continue with Hive, Spark, and Kafka. Challenges follow guided practice and use only skills already introduced in this course.

Do I need to install Hadoop or rent a cluster?

No. Each activity provides a prepared LabEx environment in your browser. You use real Hadoop services on one node; the exercises do not demonstrate production fault tolerance or distributed performance.
