AWS EventBridge and Step Functions for Beginners

Route order events, transform consumer payloads and coordinate actual Lambda tasks with decisions, result paths, bounded retries and guarded business writes. Diagnose false workflow success in an independent challenge.

AWS

Introduction

Route order events to the right consumer and coordinate work whose steps can fail. Learn EventBridge routing and Step Functions workflows through actual queue messages, Lambda results and stored orders.

The course contains five guided labs and one independent workflow-repair challenge. It progresses from matching and transforming events to decisions, task results, selective retries and duplicate protection.

What You Will Learn

  • Connect an EventBridge bus, matching rule and SQS target
  • Scope target delivery permission to one source rule
  • Transform event fields into compact queue messages
  • Coordinate Lambda tasks with decisions and result paths
  • Retry temporary failures and handle permanent errors with explicit outcomes
  • Protect business writes across retries and repeated execution
  • Repair a workflow that reports success without completing its job

Who This Course Is For

This course is for learners who have used queues and Lambda and want to connect asynchronous events to a multi-step business workflow.

Prerequisites: Event routing: Q01 message operations and IAM resource policies, then EV01 → EV02. Workflows: Lambda–DynamoDB access (FN03) and its prerequisites, then EV03 → EV04. EV05 also needs conditional writes (D04) and Lambda code updates (FN02). The workflow challenge follows EV04; EventBridge and EV05 are not prerequisites for it.

Learning environment: All activities run in a provided browser-based LabEx Linux environment. Use Terminal for AWS CLI commands and AWS View, next to Terminal, to inspect the same resource and application state. Tools and the connection are prepared; you do not need a personal AWS account or access keys. Each lab starts independently in a fresh VM. Supplied fixtures keep the focus on event routing and workflow behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does event acceptance prove target delivery?

No. Inspect the actual queue message and matching rule permissions. You test both matching and unmatched inputs before moving to workflow tasks.

Does a successful workflow status prove the business job completed?

Check task results and stored business data as well as execution history. The independent challenge specifically repairs a workflow that reports success without doing the intended job.

How do retries avoid repeating a business effect?

The labs use DynamoDB conditional writes across actual retries and repeated execution. This protects the taught write; it does not make all workflow steps one distributed transaction.

What should I do after the course?

Use these capabilities in Complete an Order Report Workflow after the project’s documented prerequisites. The service challenge follows EV04 and its guided prerequisites; each unit uses a fresh VM and ends with scoped cleanup.
