Ansible for Beginners is a hands-on course for learning Linux automation with Ansible. Through 26 interactive labs in a real terminal, you will install Ansible, select managed hosts, write repeatable playbooks, deploy files and services, reuse templates and roles, troubleshoot maintenance tasks, and manage scheduled reports.
The course combines 13 Guided Labs with 13 independent Challenges. Guided Labs explain each concept and demonstrate a working approach, while Challenges ask you to apply the same skills to a different concrete goal.
What You Will Learn
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- install Ansible in an isolated Python environment and configure a controller project;
- organize inventories, inspect connection settings, and limit changes to the intended hosts;
- write reusable playbooks that bring files, packages, and services to a declared state without unnecessary repeat changes;
- use host and group variables, facts, and registered results to produce and verify different outcomes on managed hosts;
- distribute files with explicit ownership and permissions, verify their integrity, and collect per-host reports;
- deploy validated Jinja templates and reusable roles, using handlers to apply actual configuration changes;
- integrate commands and scripts with safe arguments, meaningful failure handling, execution guards, and delegation;
- manage named cron jobs for ordinary users, preserve unrelated schedules, and observe real scheduled execution.
Who This Course Is For
This course is designed for Linux users, aspiring system administrators, and DevOps learners who want a practical introduction to configuration automation. The main sequence uses Ubuntu and Ansible builtin modules; advanced deployment patterns and RHEL certification tasks are follow-on topics.
Prerequisites: No prior Ansible experience is required. Basic familiarity with the Linux command line is helpful; new Ansible concepts and necessary command syntax are explained as they appear.
Learning environment: All labs run in a preconfigured browser-based Linux environment with an Ubuntu controller and two SSH-managed Linux nodes. You use the browser Terminal and the supplied workspace without preparing a local machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior Ansible experience?
No. The course starts with installation, project configuration, and connecting to managed hosts before progressing to playbooks, variables, templates, roles, and maintenance.
Do I need to install Ansible on my own computer?
No. LabEx provides the environment in your browser. In the installation lab and its challenge, you create your own isolated project environment and install Ansible from the supplied offline packages inside that environment.
How do the Guided Labs and Challenges work together?
Complete each Guided Lab before its paired Challenge. Every lab starts with a fresh environment, so a Challenge does not inherit the Guided Lab's files. Challenge goals and acceptance criteria define the independent task, and complete reference solutions are available separately. Completion is checked against real managed state and behavior, including repeat execution and natural cron runs.
