Updating a Hive Data Partition

Replace approved dates in a Hive ORC archive, including an empty day, while preserving other dates and original sources. One guided lab and one independent challenge.

ProjectBig Data

Introduction

Updating a Hive Data Partition is a practical project for learners who know basic Hive queries and want to correct an archive safely. A venue has approved a new confirmed-visit set for specific dates. Replace those dates, handle a legitimate empty day, and keep every other date and the original source data intact.

The course contains one Guided Lab and one independent Challenge. The Guided Lab compares append, whole-table replacement, and static partition replacement on disposable tables before you correct the real ORC archive. The Challenge gives you new dates and candidate records, including material outside the approved scope.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • inspect external table locations, partition columns, and storage formats before a correction;
  • distinguish a complete date replacement from appending new records;
  • choose a static destination partition and separately filter the corresponding confirmed source records;
  • clear an approved date whose complete confirmed replacement is empty while keeping the partition registered;
  • preserve unapproved archive rows, their original HDFS files, and the supplied source definitions and data;
  • save and execute SQL, repeat the same file, and verify the complete archive through consumer queries.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for learners with introductory Hive experience who want practice making a narrowly approved data correction.

Prerequisites: Basic Terminal navigation, HDFS paths, external Hive tables, SELECT with WHERE, partition columns, and ORC. The Guided Lab explains static partition overwrite and the shell syntax used to save SQL.

Learning environment: Each unit provides its own prepared Linux environment with Hive, HDFS, source records, and an initial archive. Work in the browser's Terminal tab; no local installation is required. Commands, table data, and runtime output are in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install Hive or Hadoop?

No. The services and course data are prepared for each unit. You focus on reading the archive, deciding the approved scope, and applying the correction.

Is a correction an update to individual records?

Here, the approved candidate is the complete confirmed set for a date. Replacing that set removes stale rows, including all old rows when the approved replacement is empty.

How does the Challenge extend the Guided Lab?

You independently inspect a new approval list and candidate data, apply the same replacement mechanism, and preserve later unapproved data. The Challenge is initialized independently and does not depend on files from the Guided Lab.
