Fixing Login Attempt Limits

Repair login counters with bounded Hydra tests, share limits across entry points and preserve normal member access and recovery.

ProjectHydraCybersecurity

Introduction

Fixing Login Attempt Limits is a practical Hydra project for learners who know basic terminal input and paths. At a prepared equipment and workshop desk, repeated failures can either block another member or leave an alternative sign-in page unprotected. Your task is to repair the policy and demonstrate protection, normal access and natural recovery with real requests.

The course contains two Guided Labs and one independent Challenge. The first Guided Lab separates one member's counter from other accounts. The second makes both sign-in pages share the same account limit. The Challenge combines those judgments in a booking portal with changed paths, field names, members and records. Each unit starts independently. Allow about 55, 50 and 45 minutes respectively; these are author estimates including reading and ordinary errors, not measured beginner completion times.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • generate a small, permitted sequence of real authentication attempts with Hydra, distinguishing client settings from a server-side limit;
  • recognize the difference between a rejected password, a limited request and a genuine authenticated identity;
  • change a short JSON policy so repeated failures follow an account rather than blocking unrelated members;
  • associate both real POST entry points with one account counter, then test each direction;
  • apply a policy explicitly without restarting the service or clearing active attempts, and use current-revision events to establish the result;
  • preserve normal reference access and complete original records, and demonstrate recovery after the cooldown expires naturally.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for beginning cybersecurity learners who want to evaluate and improve a login limit while keeping a real service usable.

Prerequisites: You should be able to enter terminal commands, recognize a file path and switch browser tabs. No programming, service installation or previous rate-limiting experience is required. The first Guided Lab explains the necessary POST fields, Hydra options, quoted arguments, JSON structure and diagnostic commands. Complete it before the second Guided Lab; the Challenge uses both taught mechanisms.

Learning environment: Each unit provides a prepared Linux terminal in Workstation and a working Equipment Desk website, or Workshop Desk in the Challenge. All accounts, passwords, equipment loans and bookings are synthetic local training resources. Documents are available in English and eight additional languages; the running websites, interface labels and command output remain English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install Hydra or build an authentication application?

No. The local service and tools are prepared. Your work is to understand the counter boundary, edit and apply the permitted policy, and test the real result. You do not develop the server or modify platform login settings.

Am I trying to discover passwords?

No. Correct test and reference credentials are supplied, along with five deliberately wrong candidates for the permitted test account. Hydra produces bounded failures so you can assess the service's response. Zero reported passwords alone does not prove protection.

Is a correct policy file enough?

No. It must match the running policy, and that revision must have genuine limit, reference-access and recovery evidence. You also open both original member records. No prose report or completion marker replaces those outcomes.

Are the small limits a production recommendation?

No. Three failures in a 30-second window and a 12-second cooldown are a controlled training contract. The project uses one local process with two POST entry points; it does not implement distributed enforcement, production-scale abuse prevention or protection against every authentication attack.
