Building a Lean Docker Image

Build a lean runtime image for a complete trail guide, preserving its filters, artwork and GPX downloads while leaving build tools behind.

ProjectDocker

Introduction

Building a Lean Docker Image is a practical project for learners who can already build and run simple containers. Prepare a visitor guide for delivery: separate its compiler and source from the runtime while preserving the complete working application.

One Guided Lab walks through the build, a deliberate missing-data failure and a new container without source mounts. One independent Challenge applies the same method to a lakeside guide with a different resource layout.

What You Will Learn

  • separate compilation and runtime with a multi-stage Dockerfile;
  • select the executable, collection, local artwork and route files the application actually needs;
  • exclude drafts and build leftovers from the build context;
  • verify real filtering, detail pages and GPX downloads rather than judging size alone;
  • recreate a delivery container from the current image without borrowing workstation files.

Who This Course Is For

This course suits Docker learners and beginning developers who want to deliver a small, complete application.

Prerequisites: Basic terminal paths, Docker build/run, Dockerfile FROM and COPY, and published ports. Go programming is not required.

Learning environment: Docker, a Go builder, complete source materials and an independent reference guide are ready. Use Workstation, Reference Guide and Your Guide in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to write Go code?

No. The program and compilation command are supplied. You decide which files belong in the build stage and which must reach the runtime.

Is the smallest image always the best result?

No. The result must preserve every trail relationship, filter, local resource and real GPX track. Size only supports the explanation. This static example can use an empty runtime; other programs may require libraries or certificates.

Do the labs share files?

No. Each starts independently. The Challenge changes the source and resource layout while using techniques taught in the Guided Lab.
