PowerShell

Introduction

PowerShell for Beginners is a hands-on introduction to PowerShell 7 for learners with no prior command-line or programming experience. Through 32 interactive labs in a browser-based Linux terminal, you will learn to work with files and objects, process structured data, and write reusable automation scripts.

The course alternates 16 Guided Labs with 16 matching Challenges. Each Guided Lab explains a small set of skills and demonstrates the commands. The following Challenge applies those skills to a new scenario, with hints, a complete solution, and automated checks of the completed result.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • discover PowerShell commands and help, navigate Linux paths, and manage files and text;
  • use variables, numeric conversion, arrays, hashtables, and custom objects;
  • filter, sort, group, and measure objects with pipelines;
  • import and export CSV, update nested JSON configuration, and extract selected log records;
  • write scripts with conditions, loops, functions, and named parameters;
  • validate inputs and communicate failures using error messages and exit codes;
  • inspect processes by ID and read and update data through a local REST API;
  • build a repeatable inventory workflow with coordinated CSV and JSON outputs.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for first-time PowerShell users and learners who want a practical foundation for scripting and data automation. It develops PowerShell language and command skills through small tasks before combining them into a reusable tool.

Prerequisites: No prior PowerShell, Linux, command-line, or programming experience is required. Necessary terminal actions and syntax are introduced in the Guided Labs before they are required in Challenges.

Learning environment: Every lab uses a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 environment with PowerShell 7.6.6 installed automatically during setup. You work in the browser terminal and do not need to install PowerShell locally. The API exercises use a service inside the lab VM and require no external service account. Course content is available in English and eight additional languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn PowerShell in a Linux environment?

Yes. These labs run the native Linux version of PowerShell 7. You practice its language, objects, pipelines, files, structured data, and scripts. Examples use Linux paths, and platform differences are explained where relevant.

Does this course teach Windows system administration?

The course focuses on PowerShell fundamentals and cross-platform automation. It does not provide Windows registry, Windows service, Active Directory, or Windows PowerShell 5.1 administration labs. The scripting foundation is useful when you later learn Windows-specific modules and workflows.

What happens if I cannot solve a Challenge?

Every Challenge follows a Guided Lab that teaches its required skills. You can use progressive hints, review the preceding lesson, or follow the separate complete solution. Automated checks evaluate the completed files or running state rather than a particular command history.

Do files carry over between labs?

No. Each Guided Lab and Challenge prepares its own input files or services. You carry the skills forward, while each task starts with a defined environment.
