Generating Personalized Invitations

Build a reusable Python generator that turns a guest CSV, event details, and a template into individual HTML invitations, with correct text handling and earlier batches preserved.

ProjectPython

Introduction

Generating Personalized Invitations is a practical Python project for learners who know the language basics and want to turn structured data into useful files. You will combine a guest list, event details, and a prepared HTML template to produce a separate digital invitation for every guest, ready to open and download.

One Guided Lab takes you from a single invitation to a reusable batch generator. One independent Challenge asks you to prepare invitations for another event using the same techniques. Each unit starts with its own prepared files.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • read a UTF-8 guest CSV with csv.DictReader and event details from JSON;
  • map guest and event fields into the six text placeholders of a string.Template;
  • distinguish CSV quoting from HTML escaping, so commas, quotation marks, Unicode, and characters such as & and < appear correctly as text;
  • use stable guest IDs for filenames, keeping separate invitations for guests who share a name;
  • validate required values, safe unique IDs, and template rendering before creating a new batch, and reject an existing batch without overwriting it;
  • open and download the actual generated HTML files while preserving the input CSV, event details, template, and earlier batches.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for Python learners who want hands-on practice with file-based automation and personalized content.

Prerequisites: You should understand Python strings, dictionaries, loops, and functions, and be able to enter basic terminal commands. File handling, CSV and JSON reading, UTF-8, and HTML text escaping are introduced in the Guided Lab.

Learning environment: LabEx provides a browser-based WebIDE with Python, prepared project files, a complete styled HTML template, and a way to preview the files you generate. Preview labels and program output remain in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install software or design a web page?

No local installation is required. The page design is provided. You focus on field mapping, validation, and generating one file per guest; CSS and advanced template frameworks are outside the course.

Will I write the whole application from scratch?

No. Command-line and file-writing code are provided in the starter program. You complete the core Python logic and learn how the supplied parts use it.

What happens if the guest data is invalid or a batch already exists?

You learn to reject missing required values, unsafe or duplicate guest IDs, and rendering errors before creating the new batch. An existing batch is refused, so you can correct the input or choose a new output directory while keeping earlier work.

Does the project send emails or create printed invitations?

The deliverable is a reusable generator and real digital HTML invitations that you can open and download. Email delivery, printing, and PDF generation are outside the course.

How does the Challenge extend the Guided Lab?

You apply the taught workflow to another event and guest list, including same-name guests and text that needs CSV quoting or HTML escaping. You must produce the complete new batch and preserve the supplied inputs and older output.
