An ordinary Worker follows rules written in code. Workers AI lets that Worker also ask a hosted model to summarize text, produce structured data, compare meaning or propose an application tool. The model is powerful but variable, so a reliable application must limit input, validate output and handle service failures instead of trusting every answer.
This course introduces each new AI idea beside a small support-ticket application. You will use Cloudflare-hosted models through a Workers AI binding, observe real behavior locally and after deployment, and keep every exercise inside the standard Workers Free allocation. No previous machine-learning knowledge or Workers Paid plan is required.
The course contains 6 guided labs and 1 independent classifier-repair challenge. Guided Labs introduce each capability before the independent challenge.
What You Will Learn
- Add a Ticket Summary Endpoint: connect a Worker to an AI model and bound its input and output.
- Stream a Help Response: deliver generated text in pieces and handle completion or cancellation.
- Extract Validated Ticket Fields: request JSON and validate the model response before accepting it.
- Generate Search Embeddings: turn text into compatible vectors and rank support documents by similarity.
- Validate Model-Selected Tool Calls: treat a tool call as a proposal, validate it, then run only an allowed operation.
- Handle Model Service Failures: separate invalid input, incompatible output, quota limits and temporary failures with bounded recovery.
- Unchecked Ticket Classifier: independently repair a classifier that trusts model output too early.
Who This Course Is For
Workers developers new to hosted inference who want to build small, validated AI features.
Prerequisites: Complete Cloudflare Workers for Beginners, especially Connect LabEx to Your Cloudflare Account. It explains the LabEx VM, Wrangler device authorization, account confirmation and account-ID configuration. You should already recognize a JavaScript Worker handler and know how to deploy and remove a Worker.
Learning environment: Use your own Cloudflare learning account. Each unit starts in a fresh VM, creates an independently named disposable Worker and ends by deleting it and logging out. Workers AI usage is measured in Neurons and shares a daily account allowance, so examples stay small and never assume that the remaining allowance is unlimited.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need machine-learning experience?
No. The course introduces summaries, streaming, structured output, embeddings and tools beside small support-ticket tasks. Workers and JavaScript foundations are required.
Will every model answer be the same?
No. Model output can vary. The labs bound inputs, validate output and handle failures rather than requiring exact generated prose.
Can I trust a model-selected tool call?
Treat it as a proposal. Validate its schema and scope before running an allowed operation; do not accept it as an instruction to perform arbitrary work.
Does this require Workers Paid?
The small examples use the standard Workers Free allocation. Workers AI usage is measured in Neurons and shares a daily account allowance; remaining allowance is not assumed to be unlimited. Each lab ends with owned resource cleanup and logout.
