Advanced MySQL Practical Labs

In this course, master advanced MySQL techniques through hands-on labs covering indexing, stored procedures, triggers, transactions, replication, and more.

DatabaseMySQL

Introduction

Practice a broad set of MySQL features that sit beyond everyday table creation and basic queries. Across 20 guided labs, you will work with database programmability, advanced SQL, performance tools, server configuration, security, data movement, backup, and replication.

Each lab isolates one feature in a small working database, letting you create it, test its behavior, inspect the result, and clean up where appropriate. The course is a practical feature survey rather than a single end-to-end database project.

What You Will Learn

  • Create and analyze indexes, full-text search, table partitions, and query plans
  • Build views, subqueries, temporary tables, CTEs, and window-function queries
  • Write stored procedures, custom functions, triggers, event schedules, and error handlers
  • Protect data with transactions, savepoints, privileges, and account-hardening practices
  • Store and query JSON values and index a generated JSON property
  • Inspect and tune server variables, logs, and InnoDB configuration
  • Create logical backups, restore databases, and import or export CSV data
  • Configure and verify source-replica replication between two MySQL containers

Who This Course Is For

This course is for learners who already understand MySQL tables, SQL queries, and basic data modification and want hands-on exposure to a wider operational and programming toolkit. Although every activity is labeled beginner, the topics are advanced relative to a first SQL course and are best approached with existing MySQL fundamentals.

Prerequisites: You should be comfortable connecting to MySQL, creating tables, and writing SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements. Basic Linux terminal and Docker familiarity will help with the server and replication labs.

Learning environment: Nineteen labs run in provided Ubuntu 22.04 VNC desktops with local MySQL services. The replication lab uses a provided Ubuntu 22.04 instance and launches two Docker containers on a private network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a certification course or an end-to-end production project?

No. It is a collection of 20 guided, feature-focused labs. There are no independent challenges, capstone project, or certification-specific objectives.

How realistic is the replication lab?

It demonstrates binary-log replication between two mysql:5.7 Docker containers on one lab host. It uses the older CHANGE MASTER TO and START SLAVE terminology, so it teaches the replication flow but not a modern production topology or failover design.

Will I use cloud databases or external accounts?

No. The database services and Docker environment are provided inside the labs. The course does not require a managed MySQL account or external infrastructure.

Does the course teach database application development?

No. The focus is SQL, MySQL server features, and command-line administration. Application drivers, ORMs, web frameworks, high-availability orchestration, and production monitoring platforms are outside the curriculum.
