30 Days of Docker

A beginner-first Docker challenge course with 30 practical, scenario-based tasks that build container operations confidence through daily missions.

Docker

Introduction

Docker becomes easier to operate when every command is tied to an observable result. Across 30 ordered daily challenges, this beginner-first course moves from taking over prepared containers to validating applications, building release images, recovering persistent state, operating Compose projects, and resolving bounded incidents.

These are challenge labs, not command-by-command walkthroughs. Each mission gives you a scenario, scope, acceptance criteria, and hints; you inspect the prepared environment, make the smallest appropriate change, and prove the outcome through container state, files, logs, HTTP responses, image metadata, mounted data, networks, or Compose behavior.

What You Will Learn

  • Start, stop, select, and inspect named containers while preserving the state of unrelated services
  • Capture service logs, copy generated packages, and produce ready or health artifacts without interrupting a running container
  • Publish and test a localhost application endpoint, pass runtime configuration, and repair a prepared container launch script
  • Tag local images, build from a Dockerfile, correct CMD, and use .dockerignore to keep scratch content out of a release image
  • Preserve queue and application data with named volumes, mount configuration read-only, and recover a container by reattaching prepared storage
  • Connect containers through a custom network and verify service discovery by container name instead of host shortcuts
  • Start and repair small Docker Compose stacks by correcting ports, environment values, service targets, and volume mounts
  • Diagnose scoped incidents with runtime state, logs, health checks, builds, storage, and network evidence, then verify both recovery and retained data

Who This Course Is For

This course is for Docker beginners and early-stage developers or operators who learn best by solving one concrete mission at a time.

Prerequisites: Basic Linux terminal navigation, editing text files, and reading command output; prior Docker practice is helpful but not required, and the early challenges introduce prepared objects before later image, storage, network, and Compose work.

Learning environment: A browser-accessible Ubuntu workspace with a local Docker daemon, prepared images, containers, scripts, files, volumes, networks, and Compose projects; every challenge starts from its own reset environment, so state does not carry between days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to finish the course in exactly 30 consecutive days?

No. “30 Days” describes the 30-mission progression. Completing one challenge per day is a useful rhythm, but you can pause or work at a different pace; the labs are ordered because later missions reuse earlier concepts.

Are these guided labs with complete commands in the instructions?

No. You receive a scenario, bounded goal, acceptance criteria, and non-spoiler hints. You decide what to inspect and which Docker commands or file edits to use, while solutions remain available if you need them.

Will my containers and files persist from one day to the next?

No. Each challenge prepares an independent environment. Persistence exercises verify data across container replacement inside that challenge, using a named volume or mount; they do not depend on state from a previous day.

Does the course cover Docker installation, remote registries, Kubernetes, or production orchestration?

No. Docker and the required local assets are already prepared. The course focuses on local Docker CLI and Compose operations; daemon installation, registry authentication, image publishing, Kubernetes, Swarm, and production platform administration are outside scope.
