Quick Start with Linux

This is a beginner's guide for Linux aimed at those new to the system and looking to begin promptly. By completing ten labs, you will grasp the basics of Linux, enabling you to perform fundamental tasks with ease.

Linux

Introduction

Build a practical Linux command-line foundation through a focused sequence of guided labs and challenges. You will begin by identifying your current user, then work with files and directories, inspect and compare file contents, control permissions and ownership, and manage user accounts.

The course pairs five guided labs with five beginner challenges, so each major topic moves from explained practice to a short independent task. The emphasis is on running commands and checking their effects in a real Linux environment—not memorizing an abstract command list.

What You Will Learn

  • Identify the current user and display user and group information
  • Navigate the Linux file system and recognize your working location
  • Create, list, copy, move, rename, and remove files and directories
  • Read selected parts of files and compare files or directories
  • Inspect and change file permissions with numeric and symbolic notation
  • Change ownership for files and directories
  • Create, modify, lock, unlock, group, and remove user accounts
  • Apply each topic in a paired beginner challenge

Who This Course Is For

This course is for complete Linux beginners who want a short, structured introduction to everyday command-line operations. It also suits learners who have seen a few Linux commands but want guided practice followed by independent checks. Its scope is intentionally focused; it does not cover networking, package management, services, processes, or shell scripting.

Prerequisites: No prior Linux or command-line experience is required. Basic familiarity with using a computer and working with files is helpful.

Learning environment: All activities run in a provided Ubuntu 22.04 VNC desktop environment, where you work directly in a Linux terminal without installing Linux locally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course suitable if I have never used Linux?

Yes. The first lab introduces the environment and basic identity commands, and later topics are taught in guided labs before you attempt the related challenges.

It contains five topic pairs. Each pair starts with a guided lab and ends with a beginner challenge covering the same area: identity, file operations, file contents, permissions, and user accounts.

Will I learn Linux system administration?

You will practice two introductory administration topics—file permissions and user accounts. Broader administration areas such as software packages, services, processes, storage, networking, and SSH are outside this quick-start course.

Do I need to install Linux or set up a virtual machine?

No. The course provides an Ubuntu 22.04 environment in the browser, so you can focus on the commands and exercises.
